Early Childhood Education

The Associate in Applied Science -Early childhood Education (ECE) degree is intended for those interested in developing knowledge and skills required to successfully conduct educational programs for young children from birth to age eight, in a range of settings. The 65-credit program is a terminal career degree which stacks small career certificates: the 11-credit Child Development Associate certificate of achievement, the 15-credit Infant Toddler Certificate of Achievement and the 36-credit ECE certificate of proficiency. 

Graduates will be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills aligned with NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) Early Childhood Professional Preparation Standards:

  • Standard 1: Promoting Child Development
  • Standard 2: Building Family and Community Relationships
  • Standard 3: Observing, Documenting, and Assessing to Support Young Children and Families
  • Standard 4: Using Developmentally Effective Approaches to Connect with Children and Families
  • Standard 5: Using Content Knowledge to Build Meaningful Curriculum
  • Standard 6: Becoming a Professional

Note:

This program requires the completion of a Criminal History Record Check (CHRC) to ensure that it is appropriate for the student to be in contact with children and participate in field experiences.  

The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) requires criminal history record checks, including fingerprints, for all child care personnel, volunteers and other individuals who will have regular contact with children in a licensed child care program, in accordance with N.J.S.A. 18A: 6-7.1.
